Black-cheeked Woodpecker - Melanerpes pucherani, male
NF Photo 110128 at Gavilan Lodge, Costa RIca
At the center of the area of Gavilan Lodge stood those dead trees. A great place for this woodpecker. It was a pair, but I only got the male photographed.

Love that 3rd action shot. Great series of the Black-cheeked Woodpecker.
SvaraRaderaI will post some more Hamerkop photos for you soon.
Great capture in the third shot.
SvaraRaderaHiya,
SvaraRaderaWe left a few white birch trunks upstanding when the crowns had to come down. I have seen woodpeckers hammering, but so far they haven't built a nesting hole there yet.
Should we give them a head start or would that put them off.
That's a nice series of photos. There are certainly enough holes for the bird to use.
SvaraRaderaGreat looking woodpecker.Number three is the keeper shot. Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
SvaraRaderaThe leap image is a fantasic capture. A lovely woodpecker.
SvaraRaderaSmashing series.
SvaraRaderaCool series on the woodpecker. The third shot is a great action shot.
SvaraRaderaagreed the leap image is great.... its almost suspended in flight.... well I guess thats what it is when you pressed the shutter. Super series of shots
SvaraRaderaGreat series! Was he coming out of the hole on the second pic? The suspended picture is a miracle shot!
SvaraRaderaThey look a bit like our woodpeckers here. Makes sense I suppose.
SvaraRaderaWhat a lovely bird he is!! In the third photo, is he jumping from the hole to another tree?
SvaraRaderaamazing shot!!!
Thank you for visiting!
Great series! love that mid-air photo, how cool!
SvaraRaderaNice series of photos! That trunk looks like a WP apartment building! I love the shot of the bird looking out of the hole.
